What Goes into a Luxury Mattress?

What Goes into a Luxury Mattress?

Mattresses aren’t the same. Just like any other product category, they range from the absolute basic to the super luxurious, and everything in between.

But, of course, what actually goes into a high-end mattress often remains a mystery. Most consumers know that luxury mattresses have a bunch of features budget alternatives don’t, but they aren’t too clued up on the details beyond that.

Fortunately, that’s where this post can help. We explore what goes into a luxury mattress and what contributes to making it “high-end.”

High-Quality Materials

Luxury mattress manufacturers start the process of building one of these products by incorporating high-quality materials. These improve comfort, airflow, and texture compared to regular products.

For example, many manufacturers include organic cotton and wool in their designs. These improve breathability and prevent pesticide outgassing.

Cashmere and silk also feature regularly, long-prized for their luxurious feel. These materials are kind to the skin and look fantastic.

At King Koil, we use Joma® Wool. It’s flame-resistant and water-repellent, and comes from New Zealand for the best finish. We also use Enkev horse hair to help regulate body temperature while the mattress is in use. Each strand is hollow, creating a naturally anti-fungal and anti-mite environment while also regulating sleeping temperature. And don’t worry: we source this material humanely as a by-product from horse groomers.

As for foams, many luxury mattress manufacturers use CertiPUR-US Certified Memory Foam. This material is what you get in some high-end options, offering unrivalled support and comfort, especially when combined with proper coils.

Sometimes, you see manufacturers advertising gel-infused or open-cell systems. These are more concerned with controlling heat levels under the mattress during hot weather, keeping you comfortable all night.

Coils And Support Systems

Coils and support systems are another critical element in the design of luxury mattresses. These add structure to the materials, giving these bedding products their signature plushness.

Most luxury mattresses have pocketed coils. These are individually-wrapped springs to provide more support and reduce motion transfer. Many of these mattresses can support two people without each person’s movements interfering with the other’s.

Brands in this space will also use micro-coils, which are essentially just smaller coils. Testing shows that these can sometimes boost mattress responsiveness and comfort, making them an attractive option for fussy sleepers.

Premium mattresses often have a higher “coil count” than their mid-range alternatives. More coils generally means more comfort, but it also increases manufacturing costs.

At King Koil, we believe great sleep starts with great support. That’s why we offer a variety of advanced innerspring systems, including our FlexCore 3,000 encased coil unit, which features thousands of individually wrapped coils that move independently to respond to your body’s unique shape and movement. Designed without glue, this system promotes better airflow, longer-lasting comfort, and a more restful night’s sleep.

Advanced Mattress Features

The advantages of luxury mattresses don’t stop with materials or coils, however. Instead, manufacturers are continually looking for new ways to make their mattresses perform even better. Because of this, the industry is more innovative than many shoppers expect once they start digging.

Cooling Technologies

For example, many high-end mattresses are replete with cooling technologies to keep sleepers comfortable at night. These equalize temperatures with the surroundings, reducing the risk of night sweats and over-heating that can hamper sleep.

Gel-infused foams are among the most popular methods. These use liquid to distribute heat through foams as sleepers move at night, preventing excessive heat buildup in any particular area.

Breathable mattress covers are another innovation. Manufacturers often make these from wool or latex and incorporate them into the mattress’s main body (instead of an extra add-on).

Natural Talalay Latex offers breathable, buoyant comfort that gently conforms to your body while maintaining a cool, well-ventilated sleep surface.

For even more advanced temperature control, Graphite-Infused Talalay Latex enhances airflow and actively draws heat away from the body, delivering refreshing, pressure-relieving support all night long.

Finally, some manufacturers are experimenting with phase-change materials. These dissipate heat by changing how they behave at different temperatures, leading to a soothing sensation while sleeping.

Personalized Comfort

What if you like a firm feel while your partner prefers a cloud-like plush experience? You shouldn’t have to meet in the middle when it comes to comfort. That’s where personalized support and zoned design come in. Mattresses with advanced zoning and dual-adjustment capabilities allow each sleeper to get the support they need. By using high quality foam layers and strategically placed coils, these mattresses adapt to different body shapes, weights, and pressure points, providing just the right feel for every part of your body. The result? Personalized comfort for both of you, and a better night’s sleep you can actually agree on.

At King Koil, we’ve taken that idea even further with the SmartLife mattress. SmartLife is an intelligent sleep system that continuously adjusts to your body’s unique shape and weight in real time. SmartLife uses patented body-sensing technology with 80 individual smart cells and 4 zones on each side of the bed to deliver responsive, personalized comfort for both you and your partner. Whether you prefer firm support or plush cushioning, SmartLife adapts as you move, so you can both enjoy a perfectly tailored sleep experience, without compromise.

Smart Features

Lastly, some luxury mattresses now have smart features. These integrate with sleep monitoring apps and devices, providing more detailed feedback (useful for bio-hackers and health enthusiasts).

High-Quality Craftsmanship

Exceptional craftsmanship is another element of luxury mattresses. This transforms luxury materials into bedding that provides you with exceptional sleep.

For example, King Koil uses hand-assembled tufting. This extra touch maintains comfort and prevents support layers from shifting over time, providing a more consistent sleeping experience that lasts for years. Plus, this technique makes the mattress look even plusher, improving the aesthetics.

The better the mattress’s craftsmanship, the longer it is likely to last. Many high-end luxury mattresses last 15 years or more, which often makes them better long-term value than cheaper alternatives.

Generous Warranties

Finally, manufacturers back up their luxury mattresses with generous warranties. These range from 10 to 25 years, depending on the vendor, with some offering “lifetime” promises.

Warranties cover common mattress issues, like sagging and defects. They also sometimes cover damage to the coils or known issues, discovered after purchase, for additional peace of mind.

For example, King Koil offers warranties on many mattresses, protecting you against manufacturing defects (both workmanship and materials). We cover things like loose coils and wires, coils and wires that rip through the fabric, sagging (provided the mattress has been supported by a matching foundation) and body indentations.

Dedicated support is available through King Koil’s hotline and via email. If you have any problems with your mattress, simply get in touch with our team to learn more. You can also contact the retail store where you purchased the mattress. We offer hassle-free returns on luxury mattresses. Just ensure you have your original receipt and law tags to process a warranty claim.
